1. Comment: What is the secret of "The Raven's" uniquely powerful appeal? The question may be unanswerable in any final sense, but we can begin to understand the poem's strange authority by isolating at least four key elements–its compelling narrative structure, darkly evocative atmosphere, hypnotic verbal music, and archetypal symbolism. Although none of these elements was original to "The Raven," their masterful combination created a strikingly original and singularly arresting poem. (Gioia)
Response: I agree with Gioia's comment on Poe's "The Raven" because it does have a very compelling structure. It is a very interesting read. The dark atmosphere is good because it draws the reader in and is sort of uneasing but not enough to scare the reader away. The symbolism is very good because it makes the reader think about the poem.
2. Comment: “The Raven” is generally accepted as one of Poe's most characteristic works in theme, tone, and execution, and Poe is highly regarded for his inspired, original imagination and deft command of language.
Response: I agree with this comment because I have read some other works of Poe, and I have to say that this one is my favorite. The tone is very interesting because there are many different emotions that can be found in it. The same goes for the theme. I also like Poe's language in the poem because it is very rich and interesting.
3. Comment: You know what’s a good way to think about “The Raven”? As a one-hit wonder—or rather, the biggest one-hit wonderiest wonder that ever wondered. Because, really, that’s exactly what it was back in the day of its publication.
Response: I disagree with this comment because I think that some of Poe's other work is also very good. As I have stated before, "The Raven" is my favorite poem by Poe but there are many other ones that I enjoy with a lot of rich themes, tones, and symbols such as "The Black Cat", "The Tell Tale Heart", "The Cask of Amontillado" and many more
